"PLANATION SERIES - Shackles"

This whole series began with the image of Harriet Tubman. There was a story of how the latest administration was dragging their feet on placing her on the $20 bill. An artist created a stamp that the user could use to stamp her face over that of Andrew Jackson. That led me to look at some quotes by Harriet Tubman and I was struck by two in particular, 1) "I think there's many a slaveholder'll get to Heaven. They don't know better", and 2) "I've heard 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' read, and I tell you Mrs. Stowe's pen hasn't begun to paint what slavery is as I have seen it at the far South. I've seen de real thing, and I don't want to see it on no stage or in no theater." Wow. After seeing what she had seen she still had empathy for slaveowners. Astounding! That is what essentially led me to using the slave shackles as glasses - to represent the horrors that she had seen. The rose colored glasses were added to highlight her optimism.
